At St. Luke’s Primary School in Swinton, the vision was to create a multifunctional outdoor area that children could enjoy all year round, whatever the weather. The school wanted a welcoming retreat type area where pupils could learn, play, and relax in a safe and engaging environment.
We transformed the space by maximising its usability and versatility, ensuring that every corner could serve a purpose. From providing sheltered areas for wet days to a open zones for activities and learning, the design encourages children to make the most of their outdoor time in all seasons. The result is a vibrant, functional space that not only meets the school’s needs but also enhances the daily experience of its pupils.

At the heart of the area is our library gazebo a striking feature designed for both learning and relaxation. With internal seating, Perspex windows to let in natural light while keeping out the elements, and built-in shelving for books and reading materials, it creates a calm and inviting retreat. The gazebo also incorporates three large mark making panels, providing opportunities for creativity and extended learning activities, all under cover. Built from durable, high quality tanalised pressure treated timber, it offers year round shade and shelter, ensuring the children can enjoy the space in all seasons.
To complement this, we installed new artificial grass surfacing, transforming the area into a tidy, hard-wearing, and versatile surface. The surface enhances both the look and usability of the space. The addition of bench seating and planter options brings balance between comfort and nature. The seating encourages social interaction and outdoor learning, while the planters give children the chance to engage with the environment, nurture plants, and meet their sensory needs. This connection to nature fosters curiosity and appreciation, enriching the overall outdoor experience.
