The existing area at Great Crosby Primary School was a large space providing a good foundation for creating distinct play zones to meet the school’s vision.

The school wanted to incorporate active play, imaginative play, creative play, and role-play elements into the space, offering diverse development opportunities for early years children. This approach ensures the area supports a wide range of learning and play experiences for young minds to thrive.

To bring the school’s vision of incorporating active play to life, we added 4 engaging pieces of equipment to the existing grass area.

The Clamberstack Midi offers a fantastic challenge for children, helping them develop crucial skills like climbing, gripping, balancing, and improving their coordination. Zig Zag Balance Beam providing children with opportunities to strengthen their balance and spatial awareness. Pull-up Bars are perfect for building upper body strength as children work on pulling themselves up, enhancing their overall physical development. Finally, the Parallel Ropes which help children improve coordination and balance as they traverse across, supporting their agility and confidence. These pieces of equipment directly target physical play, which plays a vital role in developing early years functional skills such as strength, balance, coordination, and motor control—essential for the overall growth and well-being of young learners.

Next, we focused on the imaginative, role-play, and creative aspects of the development, adding five exciting pieces of play equipment to create dynamic areas for the children.

One of the favorites amongsts the schools for its versatility, is our Role Play Cabin that can act as as various things such as —an extra learning space, a play classroom, a stage, a shop—really, the possibilities are endless! Not only does it fuel creativity, but it also provides shelter and shade for the kids as they use their imaginations. We also added a construction area, complete with a construction work bench and pulley system, built within a sleeper contained stone area. This allows children to use their motor skills as they build and move stones onto the bench. For wet play fun, we added a water wall where children can pour water down channels, pump water up, and experiment with the flow, alongside a water table for splashing, dunking toys, and filling buckets. These additions give the kids endless opportunities for creative and hands-on play, making learning and fun go hand in hand!

Finalising the area.

To complete the area, we added practical storage with our resource shed, ensuring the space stays organized and accessible. We also resurfaced a section between the existing trees with resin bonded mulch, in a natural woodland mix, allowing the area to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. To create a peaceful retreat for the children, we added curved benches, offering a quiet reading space where they can relax and unwind after lots of active play. This cozy spot provides the perfect balance of rest and nature, giving the children a chance to recharge.
